Stacey D. Stewart joined the March of Dimes Foundation as President-Elect on November 7, 2016 and will take over as President on January 1, 2017. In this role, Ms. Stewart will promote a global strategy around the organization’s mission to give all babies a healthy start. She will be responsible for leading all aspects of the organization’s strategy, vision and operations.

GEneSTATION - What we're working on: a look into labs of the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Centers

There are many reasons why the problem of prematurity is so difficult to solve. It has multiple causalities and triggers. It occurs without warning, and its incidence is extremely variable, distributed across cultures, socio-economic strata, environments and even body types. That variability is compounded even further because, singularly among other complex human traits, human gestation and birth involves multiple organs from two individuals, mom and baby. But one aspect of our research is about to get a little easier.

Rapid-Genome Sequencing - What we're working on: a look into labs of the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Centers

For the last decade or so, Dr. Stephen Quake and his team have been pioneering new techniques in rapid-genome sequencing. In 2008, for instance, they published a paper that described a new technique for diagnosing Down syndrome — simply by analyzing DNA fragments found in a pregnant woman's blood plasma.
